English art is the body of visual arts made in d has Europe's earliest and northernmost ice-age cave art. Prehistoric art in England largely corresponds with art made elsewhere in contemporary Britain, but early medieval Anglo-Saxon art saw the development of a distinctly English style, and English art continued thereafter to have a distinct character. Published to coincide with the exhibition at the Foundling Museum in London, this fascinating book will re-introduce Joseph Highmore (–), an artist of status and substance in his day, who is now largely unknown.

Joseph Highmore () is best known as a portrait painter of the Georgian middle class. He attended Sir Godfrey Kneller's Academy in Great Queen Street, while developing his portrait practice (from ) in The City of London. Curated by Dr Jacqueline Riding, Basic Instincts explores Georgian attitudes to love, desire and female respectability through the radical paintings of Joseph Highmore. A highly successful artist and Governor of London’s Foundling Hospital, Joseph Highmore () is best known as a portrait painter of the Georgian middle class.

A fine portrait in oils of William and Hannah, c. , by Joseph Highmore () may be seen at the Wilberforce House Museum in Hull, and can be viewed online as part of the BBC’s ‘Your Paintings’ Project.
